Project Overview

Running a marketplace is a very different problem from running a shop. Every order can touch several sellers, each with their own stock, pricing, delivery promise, and payout schedule — and the platform has to keep all of that consistent while still feeling like one clean shopping experience to the buyer. This walkthrough follows the full loop: a seller signing up and getting approved, a buyer discovering and ordering across vendors, and the operations team tracking fulfilment and settlement from the admin console.

What the Product Does

Seller onboarding and verification

Self-service registration with document upload, KYC checks, and an approval queue, so a new vendor can go from sign-up to live catalogue without anyone touching a spreadsheet.

Catalogue and inventory management

Category-driven product creation with variants, bulk upload, media handling, and per-seller stock — plus moderation controls so the platform decides what actually goes live.

Search, discovery, and merchandising

Faceted search, category browsing, and curated collections, with banner and promotion slots the operations team controls without a release.

Split cart and order orchestration

One cart and one payment, broken into per-seller sub-orders that each move through their own fulfilment lifecycle with independent tracking and status.

Payments, commission, and settlement

Payment gateway capture at checkout, automatic commission deduction per category, and a settlement ledger that shows each seller exactly what is owed and when it was paid.

Returns, refunds, and disputes

A returns workflow with reason capture, approval rules, refund initiation, and a dispute trail the support team can audit.

Who Uses It, and How

Buyer

  • Browse and search across every seller from a single catalogue.
  • Add items from different vendors to one cart and pay once.
  • Track each sub-order separately and raise a return from order history.

Seller

  • Register, submit KYC, and manage a storefront profile.
  • Publish products, manage stock, and price by variant.
  • Accept orders, print labels, and reconcile payouts against a settlement statement.

Platform admin

  • Approve sellers and moderate listings before they go live.
  • Set commission slabs, promotions, and delivery rules by category.
  • Monitor GMV, order health, and settlement runs from one dashboard.

Why It Matters

Adds supply without adding inventory risk — sellers bring their own catalogue.

Commission and settlement run as code, not as a monthly reconciliation exercise.

Category, commission, and promotion rules are configurable, so the model can change without a rebuild.

The architecture scales from a niche vertical marketplace to a broad horizontal one.
